For part of Tiffany’s parents’ 40th wedding
anniversary year, they came on safari with us in Malawi. We had them out
camping on safari for the first part, but they upgraded us to the luxury safari
for the last 2 nights!
The Liwonde
boat safaris are still my favorite wildlife viewing in Malawi. We saw many birds and elephants. Sadly, the Rhino Sanctuary has fallen on hard
times and the fence is down in many places. Animal snares are being found more often in the
sanctuary. Our drive saw no rhinos
but plenty of sable. We hope that
Park Management will act to restore the legacy of restoration and conservation
in Liwonde.
After a couple days camping in Liwonde, we drove to Majete
Wildlife Reserve in the Lower Shire valley. There, Robin Pope Safaris operate a wonderful lodge. The chalets open onto the Shire river
with beautiful balconies and a shower with a view. Best of all, the solar-powered batteries run an air
conditioner in the headboard which wafts cool air inside your mosquito net as
you sleep!
