Globe Trotting

We opted to take a “Round the World” ticket to do a little sight-seeing on our leave. I actually DO NOT recommend this if you have to make a lot of stops on the way back from your home country.  It makes sense when you're heading toward your home country and only carrying a few souvenirs. But there were SO MANY luggage issues involved with the trip back to Africa that it was not worth it for us. It would have been so much better to do all the travelling on the way to the US (very little luggage) and then check our bags in direct from LAX to Blantyre on the way home to Africa. We didn't enjoy lugging extra medical equipment, medications, and “comfort foods” back to Africa through New York, around Greece by buses, taxis and ferries, a Romanian airport, our small hotel room in Turkey, and back and forth to our hotel in Nairobi after our flight was rescheduled! (it was pricey at a couple places too).

But travelling was fun! We had to choose several cities to stop in for a few days. Keeping in mind only forward travel around the globe. We stopped in Thailand for 3 days on the way to the US. It’s not a lot of time to see the sites, but it was still a fun place to have a stop over!

Then my parents joined us for a little R&R for 2 weeks in Greece. What a wonderful trip! I really recommend it! We stayed on Crete for a few days, Athens for a few days, then out on a land tour of the famous archeological sites! Very nice. But by far my favorite part was staying on Santorini! What a fabulous place to be. We arrived just before spring break, so everyone was painting and cleaning, getting ready for tourist season. We had great views, nice walks, great photo ops, and wonderful food! I really recommend Greece! It is definitely on our list of places to go back to!

Enough archaeology and museums. To the islands!

Then a short 3-day stopover in Istanbul...what a great place! I had no idea. Good food, fun sites, inexpensive accomodation. And a variety of very interesting history. Another place we would definitely go back to!
